In May 1980, the city Gwangju was a zone of liberation zone in a continuing fight for freedom in South Korea after the division of Korea into North and South. This performance recites poetry to music such as one might hear from a medieval minstrel, describing the elements contained in our beautiful earth (mountains, fields, wind, trees, grass, stone, people, sunlight, etc.); these elements that were won through fierce fighting that occurred on May 18 in Democracy Square. The performance initially began at the point where a victim’s corpse from the Gwanju Massacre was temporarily kept,and continued to the fountain of Gwangju 5.18 Democracy Plaza (which remains a symbol of South Korean freedom and democracy), and ended by circling the Plaza.
A South Korean Citizen's Tale: Gwangju was a performance intended to orally convey through poetry accompanied by music from a guitar the subtle emotional changes, and sensations that we perceieve, along with the hopes and wishes that we aim for every moment, in our seemingly insignificant place in the universe, in a tiny corner of the Milky Way. Sunlight, that conveys warmth and vitality. Wind, that wispers an unknown message during our lives. The poem reffering to these elements, I hope will stir small changes that will reenemate our sense of freedom and infuse warmth that will serve as an axe to break our inner frozen sea.
1980년 5월. 광주는 분단 이후 남한에서 자유를 쟁취하기 위한 해방구였다. 이작업은 5.18민주광장을 배회하며 치열한 투쟁에 의해 쟁취되는 지극히 아름다운 대지의 요소들(산, 들, 공기, 나무, 풀, 돌, 사람, 햇빛 등)을 시적 운율로 읊는 행위였다. 퍼포먼스는 한국민의 자유성과 민주성의 상징공간인 광주 5.18민주광장 분수대 앞을 중심으로 1980년 5월 당시 희생된 광주시민의 주검을 임시로 모셨던 (구)상무관에서 시작하여 5.18민주광장을 돌며 행위는 마무리 되었다.
'음유시가_광주'는 더 나아가 현재 나(혹은 우리)의 자유로운 활동과 생명력에 미지의 메시지를 전하는 바람, 따스한 온기와 생명력을 전하는 햇볕, 개인의 바램과 소망을 담아두는 은하수 그리고 무한한 자유와 생명을 잉태하는 대지의 에너지가 만나, 매 순간 감지되는 미시적 감각과 미묘한 감정의 변화를 기타 운율에 맞춰 구음(口音, oral sound)으로 전달하고자 한 행위였다. 이 과정을 통해 단단히 얼어붙은 우리들 내면의 바다를 깨는 도끼로서, 자유의 감각을 부활시키고 온기를 불어넣는 미시적 변화가 될 것을 기대해 보았다.
